Graduated from the École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in 2016, Andrés Barón develops an artistic practice at the intersection of cinema, video, and photography. His work examines contemporary images as they are shaped by screens and networks, engaging with spaces of representation and modes of visual circulation. His approach can thus be understood as an investigation into the ways images are viewed and interpreted today, which he recontextualizes and diverts in order to test their codes and conventions.
Andrés Barón moves across different visual categories, blurring their boundaries and generating forms of incongruity, both literal and allegorical. His work is permeated by recurring motifs — portraits with insistent gazes and pronounced corporeality, drawing on stereotypes from mass media culture, landscapes and natural elements, urban abstractions, decorative fragments, or iconographic references — which multiply situations of looking and seek to probe their intensity.
Through these subjects, tensions emerge between seemingly opposing elements: still and moving images, the old and the contemporary, abstraction and figuration, legibility and misinterpretation. Each image is treated as an unstable sign, deliberately unsettled in order to reveal the grammatical, narrative, and polysemic potential of images.
His work has been presented in numerous international contexts, including the International Film Festival Rotterdam, the Edinburgh International Film Festival, Anthology Film Archives (New York), Images Festival (Toronto), LA Film Forum (Los Angeles), Le BAL (Paris), Künstlerhaus Stuttgart, and The Island Club (Limassol), among others. He was shortlisted for the Prix des Amis du Palais de Tokyo in 2018. These films have also been the subject of two retrospectives: one in Paris, at Silencio des Prés, organized by DS Galerie in 2023, and another in Amsterdam, at Film Theater Uitkijk, organized by Tlön Projects in 2025.
In recent years, several solo exhibitions have been devoted to his work, notably by the Fondation Hermès at the Cristallerie de Saint-Louis, “Cling Cling Boum” in 2022, and at the Chapelle Saint-Jacques Art Center in 2023, where he presented his recent films “calcomanías”. In 2023, he held his first solo exhibition with DS Galerie, “Grammars”, presented at the gallery and later in the Curiosa sector of Paris Photo. In 2025, Andrés Barón presented his first institutional solo exhibition in Bogotá, Colombia, “el ruido metálico de la luna”.
His work is held in several public and private collections, including the FRAC Île-de-France (work “Portals”, 2019, acquired in 2023), the FRAC Franche-Comté (“Mirror Travelling”, 2017, acquired in 2024), and the Fonds d’art contemporain – Paris Collections (“Fresco (tres veces)”, 2022, acquired in 2025).
