Opening
08.11.2023
For its first participation in Paris Photo, in the Curiosa section, DS Galerie is pleased to present the work of Colombian artist, photographer, and video-maker Andrés Barón (b. 1986). On this occasion, the artist presents “Surfaces Dépliées”, a solo exhibition bringing together photographic works and videos through which he explores the polysemy of images and the ways in which they are constructed, transformed, and elude the viewer’s gaze.
Conceived specifically for Paris Photo, this presentation unfolds a body of work produced between 2018 and 2023. By bringing together different series and creating a dialogue between mediums, the exhibition highlights the coherence of a sustained artistic research while revealing the richness and subtlety of the artist’s vision. Andrés Barón develops a sensitive and experimental approach to the image, where each work functions as a space of disruption and displacement.
At the core of his practice lies a particular attention to the materiality and tactility of the image. Through processes of framing, layering, fragmentation, and the manipulation of supports, the artist invites viewers into an unstable perceptual experience, where familiar points of reference begin to shift. The image is no longer merely a surface of representation, but becomes an object to be sensed, navigated, and even mentally reconstructed.
By blurring the boundaries between still and moving images, Andrés Barón questions the very foundations of the photographic medium. His videos extend his photographic investigations, while his photographs sometimes appear animated by a latent temporality. This porosity between forms creates an ambiguous space in which the gaze oscillates, hesitates, and continuously redefines itself.
With “Surfaces Dépliées”, the artist proposes a reflection on contemporary regimes of visibility and on the ways we interpret images. By subverting expectations and multiplying layers of meaning, he engages the viewer in an active, almost physical experience, where seeing becomes an act of construction as much as perception.
Graduated from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris (2016), Andrés Barón develops his artistic practice through film, video and photography. His approach establishes a relationship with the image transformed by screens and networks, playing with the spaces of representation. His work has already been the subject of numerous group and solo exhibitions and festivals in France and abroad. Paris Photo 2023 with DS Galerie is his first solo show in a fair. More info
