Max Blotas is a French artist whose practice lies at the intersection of engineering, archaeology and fiction. Through installations combining machines, sculptures, video and automated devices, Max Blotas creates autonomous ecosystems that reenact motifs drawn from both contemporary and historical mythologies.
The works of Max Blotas often take the form of mechanized maquettes or technical devices operating in closed circuits, where fluids, motors, light and cables form living systems. Whether referencing an underground nightclub, an ancient temple, abandoned urban environments or corporate office interiors, these spaces are reconstructed as narrative machines that reveal the invisible, symbolic or fictional dimensions of specific places. By diverting scientific and technological tools from their original function, Max Blotas introduces elements of chance and magic, producing simulated worlds in which air, water and light appear to follow their own cycles.
Educated at the Beaux-Arts de Paris (DNSAP, 2021) after completing an MFA at the Slade School of Fine Art (UCL), London, Max Blotas has received several awards including the Prix Jeune Création (2022) and the Thaddaeus Ropac Prize – Fondation des Amis des Beaux-Arts (2019). The work of Max Blotas has been presented in numerous group exhibitions across Europe, including at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Yerevan, the Biennale de l’Image Possible in Liège, the CREA in Venice, and the MOMus – Museum of Modern Art–Costakis Collection in Thessaloniki.
