After studying philosophy at King’s College London, Augusta Lardy Micheli graduated from the City and Guilds of London Art School in 2021, before being awarded the Freelands Foundation Painting Prize in London. Augusta Lardy Micheli’s work addresses the transitivity of being and the subjectivity of the gaze. She examines what constitutes the unspoken power of the image and the pre-objectual existence of a composition, asking the question: what is the metaphysical evolution of an object or feeling as it endures through time and space? Augusta Lardy Micheli leaves figuration open ended behind veils of paint, inviting viewers to forge their own version of the work. A violent scream is blurred by veils of translucent paint: plurality of overlaying, plurality of interpretations and truths. The artist explores the notion of the Sublime, and in particular how it has evolved from the 18th century to the nowadays anthropocenic era. She examines how traditional romantic depictions of Alpine landscapes present pristine landscapes that are now the setting for a decaying ecosystem: glaciers are melting, dams are receding, rocks are breaking. As we observe these landscapes altered by man’s geological impact on the Earth, the force of the traditional sublime is transformed into a soft terror, an environmental Angst. Augusta Lardy Micheli’s pictorial work explores the notion of the anthropocenic Sublime. Recent exhibitions include “Calix et Calore” at Galerie Karen Huber (Mexico City, Mexico), “Kérosène” at Galerie Belmonte (Madrid, Spain), and the “Verzura” exhibition organized by C.G. Williams at Palazzo Sergardi Biringucci (Siena, Italy). Augusta Lardy Micheli will present her first solo show in France at DS Galerie in autumn 2024.
