For its second participation in Art-O-Rama, DS Galerie is pleased to present a duo show featuring Anglo-Belgian artist Marijke Vasey (b. 1977, Belgium) and Colombian artist Andrés Barón (b. 1986, Colombia). This unique encounter between two singular practices creates a subtle dialogue, where painting and photographic or video imagery explore suspended temporalities and novel modes of perception.
For both artists, time seems to exist outside itself: a strange, floating, ambient, atmospheric time. Like those moments when the mind intensifies and opens to the world of dreams, their works capture instances where images lose their meaning, succeed one another, merge, and transform. It is a time of reverie or somnambulism, where the experience of perception unravels, becoming fluid and unpredictable.
Andrés Barón draws on photography and cinema to question the ways we read and interpret images today. His works recontextualize imagery, subverting established codes and conventions, and navigate across different categories—portraits, still lifes, performative scenes, and abstractions. He deliberately blurs distinctions between these registers, generating incongruity both literally and symbolically, creating an experience in which the viewer must suspend certainties and allow themselves to be guided by the movement of images.
Marijke Vasey, in turn, practices a painting that interrogates materiality and the very condition of the canvas. She merges images, references, and painterly techniques, pushing them toward the margins and questioning the frame as a condition of painting’s existence. Her canvases present a painting without a subject, a painting of emptiness, probing interior spaces and inviting the viewer to traverse their own perceptions and emotions. There emerges from her work a meditative, almost introspective dimension, where each surface becomes a space for reflection and resonance.
In this presentation, Marijke Vasey’s paintings and Andrés Barón’s still or moving images respond to each other through contrast and tension, at the center and at the margins. Their works intertwine in a dialogue that deconstructs our relationship to image, time, and space, immersing the viewer in a sensitive, enveloping experience. Between materiality and immateriality, reality and fiction, these two practices meet to reveal the complexity and fragility of contemporary perception.
Graduated from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris (2016), Andrés Barón develops his artistic practice through film, video and photography. His approach establishes a relationship with the image transformed by screens and networks, playing with the spaces of representation. His work has been shown in various venues and exhibitions in France and abroad. DS Galerie devoted two solo exhibitions to him in 2023, one at the gallery “Grammars”, the other at Paris Photo. Marijke Vasey is an Anglo-Belgian artist who lives and works in Saône-et-Loire (FR). She is a graduate of Goldsmiths College, London (2019). Marijke Vasey examines the relationship between painting and decoration, whether it be opulent 18th century symbolism or current, digital, floating imagery. The artist proposes a new look at the status of decorative embellishment, focusing on the role of the frame in the context of painting. As such, painted frames act as disruptive agents, encroaching from the edges of the canvas on the near-monochromic purity of the ‘Turneresque’ tinted surfaces they surround. She presented her first solo show in February 2024 at DS Galerie. More info
