Art-O-Rama
Opening
30.08.2024
For its second participation in Art-O-Rama, DS Galerie is pleased to present a duo show with Anglo-Belgian artist Marijke Vasey (b. 1977, Belgium) and Colombian artist Andrés Barón (b. 1986, Colombia).
For both artists, time is suspended, time is out of time: a time of the bizarre, of displacement, of the ambient, of the atmospheric. Like that moment when brain activity intensifies to open up to the world of dreams. Where images lose meaning, where they chain and merge: a time of dreams or sleepwalking. Andrés Barón relies on photography and film to investigate our ways of reading images today, to recontextualize them and subvert their codes and conventions. He navigates between different categories: portraits, still lifes, performative scenes, and abstractions, blurring the distinction between them, and creating incongruity in a literal and allegorical way.
Marijke Vasey, on the other hand, amalgamates images, references, as well as pictorial techniques and shifts them to the margins, surrounding these canvases. Posing in a bewildering way the question of the frame as a condition of the existence of painting. Here is a painting without a subject, a painting of emptiness, which probes our souls and invites us to cross over.
The painting of Marijke Vasey and the still or animated images of Andrés Barón meet by contrast at the center and at the margin in a proposal that deconstructs our relationship to the image, time, and space.
Graduated from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris (2016), Andrés Barón develops his artistic practice through film, video and photography. His approach establishes a relationship with the image transformed by screens and networks, playing with the spaces of representation. His work has been shown in various venues and exhibitions in France and abroad. DS Galerie devoted two solo exhibitions to him in 2023, one at the gallery “Grammars”, the other at Paris Photo. Marijke Vasey is an Anglo-Belgian artist who lives and works in Saône-et-Loire (FR). She is a graduate of Goldsmiths College, London (2019). Marijke Vasey examines the relationship between painting and decoration, whether it be opulent 18th century symbolism or current, digital, floating imagery. The artist proposes a new look at the status of decorative embellishment, focusing on the role of the frame in the context of painting. As such, painted frames act as disruptive agents, encroaching from the edges of the canvas on the near-monochromic purity of the ‘Turneresque’ tinted surfaces they surround. She presented her first solo show in February 2024 at DS Galerie. More info
