Opening
05.10.2023
For its first participation at SWAB, the gallery is pleased to present a Solo Show by the Franco-Syrian artist Raphaël-Bachir Osman featuring a selection of recent works, some of them previously unseen, based on the theme of gluttony, which is very present in the artist’s work. The paintings with evocative titles: “Choco Barquette”, “Mille-feuille”, “Chocotablette”, “Du lait pour la douceur” …. together express the variety of the artist’s style, pictorial treatments and above all his hardening desire for painting.
“At all costs, never lock yourself into a style. Always subordinate the painting to the subject. To make every detail an obsession. Finally, to avoid boredom. There are the watchwords that guide Raphaël-Bachir Osman’s pictural work. His series on the theme of delicacies honours pastries: éclair with velvety icing, generous chocolate biscotti on a gingham tablecloth, embossed mille-feuilles toppings worked in series with a piping bag, etc. Since the subject indicates its technical treatments, the oil must be smeared on the canvas as one spreads chocolate on the toast.
Trough a claimed brazeness, his flat works absorbs the codes of restoration and iconography of the still life to better detach themselves from them. The artist strives to nestle finesse in excess. The extreme slowness of the work is put to the service of hyper-objectivity of the representation wich laughs at the art world whose absurdities it insidiously reveals.”

Graduated from the Haute École des Arts du Rhin with honours (2017), Raphaël-Bachir Osman develops a plural practice ranging from painting to installation. By mixing registers and tones as much as materials and effects, Raphaël-Bachir Osman skilfully plays with a singular humour on the borders of the absurd, bad taste or perhaps the keys to a mystical symbolism whose codes would remain to be discovered.
