Simon Petepiece is a self-taught artist who works directly with construction materials and processes. His practice addresses and derives meaning from the symbolic quality of architectural spaces. By artworks that range from and combine sculpture, painting and drawing, he explores how the built environment records and reflects our cultural beliefs, values and history. Having previously worked as an architect, materiality is at the heart of his artistic practice. This can be felt in both the physical assembly of his work and the constructed nature of his drawings, which play with the conventions of perspective. Working primarily with drywall and steel studs, two components used to build walls, his artworks reveal the evocative properties of materials that are not intended to be visible. In his most recent projects, his work combines this material language with forms and details from religious architecture. In particular exploring the iconographic and narrative elements of Christian spaces and their connection to devotional painting and sculpture. In these works the anthropomorphic quality of spaces is intensified as furniture, windows and columns become imbued with sacred connotations.
