Works and lives
Réunion Island, France
Brandon Gercara is a queer and decolonial artist, researcher and activist, and a graduate of the École Supérieure d’Art de La Réunion. They develop a multidisciplinary practice that brings together performance, photography, video, installation and painting.
Their work interrogates dynamics of domination in postcolonial contexts and explores questions of gender, decolonial feminism, intersectionality and creolization. Through their projects, Brandon Gercara creates political and sensitive spaces where forms of counter-power can emerge, often drawing on references from popular culture.
At the core of their practice lies the question of voice and visibility for diasporic communities. The artist notably explores lip-sync, a central practice in drag cultures, which they détourne into a device of empowerment through cross-dressing, transhistorical borrowing and the construction of queer and racialized genealogies. They also develop Majik Kwir, a cycle of tales imagining a queer mythology from La Réunion.
Brandon Gercara is also the founder of Requeer, a platform and association dedicated to LGBTQIA+ people in La Réunion, which organizes research projects, festivals and events, including the island’s first LGBTQIA+ Pride march. Their work has been presented in numerous institutional contexts and international festivals. In 2025, they participated in Les Rencontres de la photographie d’Arles with the project Du Magma dans l’océan, as well as in Le Nouveau Printemps in Toulouse where Majik Kwir was presented.
Their work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at FRAC Réunion (2024), Contretype, Brussels (2023), and Transpalette, Bourges (2023). They have also participated in group exhibitions at La Gaîté Lyrique, Paris (2024), La Friche Belle de Mai, Marseille (2024), CCCOD, Tours (2023), the Salon de Montrouge (2022), and the Casablanca International Biennale (2022). Their works are included in the public collections of the CNAP, FRAC Réunion, and the Artothèque de La Réunion.
Brandon Gercara will present their first solo exhibition at the gallery in autumn 2026.
