Graduating from Moscow’s British High School of Art and Design in 2019, Andrei Pokrovskii leaves Russia to settle in London. His artistic practice is primarily concerned with the image of space and the problem of relations with various places - real, mythical and virtual. Recreating the process of attachment to an environment, Andrei constructs a stage of sorts and through the stories on the scene traces the changes in its perception. In this model of space scenery always controls the characters which serve as extensions of the location. The poses of the figures are pronouncedly static and frozen, making them like sculptures which decorate the interior and exterior. By making the painting’s subject and language fit the painting’s own environment and through combinations of various materials and sculptural elements : “embrios” of doorhandles, furniture, architecture and vegeatation, which are in a process of growth outwards from the paintings interior, Andrei Pokrovskii emphasises the object-oriented nature of his work and fills a certain gap between the image and the viewer’s space, making the work an artefact of the place it depicts.
Andrei Pokrovskii has exhibited his work many times internationally, in solo shows such as “Monasticon Universum” at Osnova Gallery in Moscow in 2021 and more recently “Sprout” at Ribot Gallery in Milan in autumn 2024, as well as in group shows such as “Tresspassing Threshold” at ZÉRUÌ Gallery in London and “Prelude” at MAMA Projects New York, in 2024. In autumn 2024, Andrei Pokrovskii will present his work for the first time in Paris, at DS Galerie for the exhibition “Chambre d’échos” in the gallery’s salon.
